Spinifex Indian Spin
Onder de verzamelnaam Spinifex treedt een steeds wisselend collectief van avontuurlijk ingestelde jazzmusici op die zich gedurende het jaar 2011 enkele maanden hebben verdiept in de muzikale tradities van zuidelijk India. Doordat de Karnâtaka Sangîta, de klassieke hofmuziek van die regio, zich door haar frisheid en de vitaliteit uitstekend leent voor smaakvolle en opwindende jazzimprovisaties, besloot het sextet muzikanten onder leiding van trompettist Gijs Levelt en saxofonist Tobias Klein zichzelf opnieuw uit te dagen. Ter aanvulling van het nieuwe collectief werd daarom Dr. Mysore Manjunath uitgenodigd. Met zijn vaste percussionisten B.C. Manjunath en Pramath Kiran heeft deze Indiase meester-violist het Fireflies Festival 2011 van Bangalore, ook wel het Woodstock van India genoemd, op zijn kop gezet met schroeiende improvisaties.
Spinifex is the moniker of a continually changing collective of adventurous jazz musicians. During 2011, they have spent several months engrossing themselves into the musical traditions of Southern India. As the freshness and vitality of the Karnâtaka Sangîta, the classical music of that region, is very conducive to jazz improvisation, these musicians decided to test themselves once more. Because of this, they invited Dr. Mysore Manjunath to join the new collective. Together with his percussionists, this masterful violin player was responsible for a blistering performance during the Fireflies Festival 2011 in Bangalore.
