Dit dwarse bandje speelde al eens in De X, in pre-corona tijden, en liet de aanwezigen toen al van hun stoelen vallen door de ingenieuze en geniale composities, doorspekt met een flinke dosis muzikale humor, en gespeeld met een ongekende virtuositeit.

Satanique Samba Trio is dan ook geen trio maar een vijftal, en ze spelen ook geen samba, althans in de reguliere zin. De groep werd immers opgericht met als doel om de populaire clichés van de Braziliaanse traditionele muziek te ontmantelen. Samba's, bossa nova's, forró's en andere ritmes worden op hun kop gezet, uit elkaar getrokken en ontregeld, om er vervolgens een geheel eigen versie van te brouwen. Avantgarde? Zeker. Maar wel op een luchtige, speelse wijze. Hier wordt vrolijk gejongleerd met vastgeroeste muzikale conventies.

Satanique Samba Trio wordt qua muzikale gekte niet alleen vergeleken met avant-pop legendes als Captain Beefheart en Frank Zappa, maar ook met hun populaire landgenoten Os Mutantes. De groep veroverde een cultstatus in Brazilië als openingsact voor o.a. Tom Zé en Naná Vasconcelos. Hier speelde ze al eens op de Music Meeting in Nijmegen en in het Bimhuis te Amsterdam. Nu komen ze hun nieuwste plaat promoten: Cursed Brazilian Beats Vol. 2. 'Ze duiken diep in de Braziliaanse roots, hakken die in stukken en re-assembleren de delen tot iets wat je zou kunnen omschrijven als ‘Captain-Beefheart-zou-zo-klinken-als-hij-Braziliaan-was’.' (Gonzo Circus)




Beefheartian and Zappa-esk Brazilian music

This crazy group already played De X, in pre-corona times, and fully surprised the audience with their ingenious compositions, musical humor and playful virtuosity. Furthermore Satanique Samba Trio is not a trio but a quintet, and they don’t play samba either, well, not in the regular sense. The group was formed with one purpose: to deconstruct all the popular clichés of the Brazilian folk music. Samba's, bossa nova's, forró's and all kind of other rhythms are are turned upside down, torn apart and finally reassembled in an unique 'satanesque' way.

Avantgarde? Surely. But in a playful, light-hearted way. This band is merrily juggles with entrenched musical conventions.
Satanique Samba Trio is not only compared to avant-pop legends like Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa, but also to their popular fellow countrymen Os Mutantes. Satanique Samba Trio earned their cult status in Brazil as an opening act for big names like Tom Zé and Naná Vasconcelos. Here they played Music Meeting in Nijmegen and the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
Now they are here to promote their latest record: Cursed Brazilian Beats Vol. 2.
