PEEL SLOWLY AND SEE

Voor bijwonen van de concerten is een coronatoegangsbewijs nodig !

Wie nieuwsgierig is naar nieuwe en opwindende muziek mag Peel Slowly And See (PSAS) zeker niet missen. Peel Slowly And See ontstond als initiatief van platenzaak Velvet.

Het begon als kleinschalige avonden met intieme concerten in het Imperium Theater, waarbij ‘ontdekken’ het sleutelwoord was. Die gedachte is nog immer de hoofdgedachte van het festival: Peel Slowly And See programmeert ‘ontdekwaardige’ muziek in alle genres.

Sinds de editie van 2018 is PSAS een breder samenwerkingsverbond. Naast Velvet zijn ook andere Leidse concertorganisatoren als Funked Up, Subblicious en dus ook Muziekpodium De X betrokken bij PSAS. Zo is PSAS nog eclectischer, en nog verrassender geworden.Van punk tot klassiek, van world tot pop, van jazz tot underground, alles is mogelijk, zolang het maar goede muziek is.

Voor deze editie staan onder andere de volgende acts op het programma:

* KAYHAN KALHOR & REMBRANDT FRERICHS TRIO

De Perzische kemenche-maestro Kayhan Kalhor is een van de grootste artiesten van zijn land. In Nederland trad hij al vele malen op in zalen als RASA, Tropentheater en Bimhuis, niet alleen met Perzische artiesten maar ook met andere internationale virtuosi.

Nu is Kayhan Kalhor op PSAS te bewonderen, in combinatie met het Rembrandt Frerichs Trio. Over dit project zegt Kalhor zelf:
“Je kunt het niet categoriseren, het is geen jazz, geen klassieke muziek, het is gewoon iets wat we doen met onze instrumenten waarbij alles draait om improvisatie.”

Dat is ook goed te horen op hun in 2019 verschenen cd It's Still Autumn, die wereldwijd lovende recensies ontving. En terecht.

Het spel is nu eens dromerig, dan weer explosief. De site Jazzenzo schreef vol enthousiasme: “Frerichs zelf, met contrabassist Tony Overwater en slagwerker Vinsent Planjer, anticipeerden volledig op hetgeen Kalhor uit zijn kamancheh toverde, terwijl omgekeerd de Iraniër zijn spel boog naar de verrichtingen van het trio. [..] elke noot kreeg een aspect van eeuwigheid mee en dat maakte dit concert bijna hallucinerend. [..] een concert van een consistent topniveau”.
Waarvan akte.

* BRADER MÛSIKÎ

De Turks-Koerdische zanger Brader Mûsikî is een goed bewaard geheim. Geboren in 1958 in Mûsika (what's in a name!), in het Turkse deel van Noord-Koerdistan, is hij al jaren woonachtig in Nederland, nadat hij in 1986 niet meer kon terugkeren naar Turkije vanwege de junta aldaar.

Als student in de jaren zeventig moest hij ruim 3 maanden de gevangenis in wegens het luisteren naar Koerdische muziek, dat was immers verboden. Hij zei maar niet dat het zijn eigen muziek was, anders had de gevangenisstraf een stuk langer geduurd.

Hij heeft zich altijd in zijn muziek bezig gehouden met de strijd van het Koerdische volk voor gelijke rechten. Zijn stem en tembur (een soort luit) bleken prima instrumenten te zijn om zijn boodschap te verspreiden. Hij is dan ook een groot en gerespecteerd artiest onder de Koerden wereldwijd, en heeft naast 12 cds ook al in zijn eerdere jaren 12 cassette's uitgebracht. In 2004 mocht hij voor het eerst terug naar Turkije voor een toernee, waar hij zo'n 50 concerten speelde.

Hij werkte ondermeer samen met de Nederlandse punkband The Ex, en zijn laatste plaat, Herim Kuda, verscheen in 2020 op het Terp label, inderdaad het label van The Ex.

Brader Mûsikî zal solo optreden, begeleid door zijn tembur.

* YĪN YĪN

In China staan yin en yang voor balans tussen schijnbaar tegenovergestelde krachten. De groep Yīn Yīn omhelst juist onbalans, om zo muzikale grenzen te verleggen.

Deze groep uit Maastricht combineert psychedelische Thaise muziek uit de jaren 60 en 70 met pop, rock, funk en disco. Het resultaat is een opgewekte, swingende concoctie met zuidoosterse elementen die ze zelf Thaichedelica noemen.

Inmiddels bracht de groep twee vinyl singles uit, onder anderen eentje op Bongo Joe, waar ook hun debuutalbum in 2019 verscheen.

Festival of discoveries

Those interested in new and exciting music surely shouldn't miss the festival Peel Slowly And See (PSAS). The festival started as a small initiative by Velvet music store in Leiden.
Key was and still is presenting new and exciting bands, from all music styles and genres.

Since the 2018 edition other music organisations in Leiden joined PSAS: Funked Up (specialised in  funky jazz and soul), Subblicious (underground & alternative) and Muziekpodium De X (world music). This created an even more adventurous and more eclectic program. But always of high quality!

Amongst others these bands will be presented:

* KAYHAN KALHOR & REMBRANDT FRERICHS TRIO

Kayhan Kalhor is one of the biggest musicians in his home country Iran. This kamancheh virtuoso is well known for his groundbreaking collaborations with New York Philharmonic and Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, in which he reshapes Classical Persian music in a new contemporary art form.

But this set-up, alongside the jazz pianist Rembrandt Frerichs and his Trio, promises something different. ‘You can’t really categorise it,’ Kalhor says. ‘It’s not Jazz, it’s not Classical, it’s just an organic something we do with our instruments where the focal point is improvisation.’

Rembrandt Frerichs has always embraced this fluid approach, blending the Jazz tradition, Classical music and the Arabic music that he fell in love with while living in Egypt. It’s a musical language of great emotional depth, enriched by his singular approach to the fortepiano, the instrument once gifted to the Shah of Persia by Napoleon. Here these two worlds meet again, as Frerichs takes a seat behind the fortepiano alongside bassist Tony Overwater and Vinsent Planjer on percussion.

*  BRADER MÛSIKÎ

Brader Mûsikî was born in 1958 in Mûsika (what's in a name!), in the Turkish part of Northern Kurdistan.

In the seventies, while he was a student, he was jailed for three and a half months for listening to a Kurdish cassette. He didn't tell them it was him playing on the cassette, otherwise the imprisonment would have been much longer. Performing songs in Kurdish was strictly forbidden.

The power of art and music and the struggle for equal rights for the Kurdish people have been the pillars of his career. His voice and  tembur (a sort of lute) turned out to be great tools to spread the message. In 1986 he couldn't return to Turkey and he is living in Holland now. He is very well known and respected in the Kurdish community worldwide. In 2004 he was allowed to return to Turkey for a tour and played around 50 concerts.

He worked together with the Dutch punk outfit The Ex. His latest album, Herim Kuda,
was released in 2020 on the Terp label, the label of The Ex.

Brader Mûsikî will play solo, accompanying himself on tembur.

* YĪN YĪN

Yin and yang describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be in balance. The band Yīn Yīn however embraces imbalance, in order to push musical boundaries.

The Maastricht-based band combines psychedelicThai music from the sixties and seventies with pop, rock, funk and disco. This results in an exciting concoction full of South East Asian elements that the band itself calls Thaichedelica.

The group relesed 2 vinyl singles; one on the Bongo Joe label, on which their debut album was released too in 2019.

Peel Slowly And See takes place in Gebr. De Nobel, Scheltema en Marktsteeg 10 in Leiden.
