Yaksao is normaliter een ensemble van zeven jonge muzikanten uit Cambodja die allemaal geschoold zijn in de traditionele Khmer muziek van hun land. De groep speelt eigen composities maar deze zijn geworteld in diezelfde muzikale traditie.
Yaksao is genoemd naar de eerste hoofdstad van Cambodja die wij onder de naam Angkor kennen, maar in Cambodja eigenlijk Yasodharapura heet, en het centrum was van het Khmer-rijk van de 9e tot de 15e eeuw.
In plaats van zeven muzikanten is de groep nu op tournee met 4 muzikanten, 3 mannen en 1 vrouw. Maar omdat iedere muzikant gemiddeld 3 instrumenten speelt, is het totale klankpalet toch heel breed.
Naast diverse trommels, bekkens en gongs zijn er ook instrumenten als de chapei (3-snarige luit), ta khe (3-snarige cither), tro (knieviool), pei or (soort hobo), kloy (fluit), en reneat ek (xylofoon) te horen.
Het geluid en de melodieën spelen voor Yaksao een centrale rol. Hiermee drukken ze vele emoties uit, zonder daar teksten voor nodig te hebben. Vocalen worden wel gebruikt, maar alleen om klanken na te bootsen.
De groep is opgeleid aan de Cambodian Living Art Foundation in Siem Reap, hét instituut in Cambodja dat de culturele erfenis bewaart en propageert. Na het schrikbewind van de Rode Khmer was er namelijk nog weinig cultuur over, omdat veel muzikanten, dansers en andere cultuurdragers werden uitgemoord. Men moest weer vanaf de grond af alles opbouwen, en dat heeft veel tijd en moeite gekost.
Het is dus best bijzonder dat er vanavond een goede groep uit Cambodja hier op de palnken staat. Geniet ervan!
Own compositions on traditional instruments from Cambodia
Yaksao is normally an ensemble of 7 young artists from Cambodia, all trained in the traditional Khmer music of their country. The group plays their own compositions, but these are all rooted in this musical tradition.
Yaksao has been named after the first capital of Cambodia, known to us as Angkor, but in Cambodia actually named Yasodharapura. It was the epicenter of the Khmer State from the 9th until the 15th century.
In stead of 7 musicians Yaksao will be touring Europe with only 4 musicians, 3 men and 1 woman. However, as every musician plays at least 3 instruments, the sound of the group is very diverse and broad. Apart from several drums, cymbals and gongs also instruments like the chapei (3-stringed lute), ta khe (3-stringed zither), tro (spike fiddle), pei or (kind of oboe), kloy (flute), and reneat ek (xylophone) are featured.
Central to the group are the sound and the melodies. With these they express a range of emotions, without needing any texts. Vocals however are used, but only to imitate sounds.
Yaksao has been trained at the Cambodian Living Art Foundation in Siem Reap, thé institute for cultural heritage in Cambodia. Because after the reign of terror by the Khmer Rouge there wasn't much culture left. Many musicians, dancers and other people from the cultural scene had been murdered. Everything had to be built up from scratch again, taking a lot of effort and time as you can imagine.
So it's quite special to have a good group from Cambodia on stage tonight. Enjoy!
