Wie nieuwsgierig is naar nieuwe en opwindende muziek mag Peel Slowly And See (PSAS) zeker niet missen. Peel Slowly And See ontstond als initiatief van platenzaak Velvet.
Het begon als kleinschalige avonden met intieme concerten in het Imperium Theater, waarbij ‘ontdekken’ het sleutelwoord was. Die gedachte is nog immer de hoofdgedachte van het festival: Peel Slowly And See programmeert ‘ontdekwaardige’ muziek in alle genres.
Sinds de editie van 2018 is PSAS een breder samenwerkingsverband.
Naast Velvet zijn ook andere Leidse concertorganisatoren als Funked Up, Subblicious en Muziekpodium De X betrokken bij PSAS. Zo is PSAS nog eclectischer, en nog verrassender geworden.Van punk tot klassiek, van world tot pop, van jazz tot underground, alles is mogelijk, zolang het maar goede muziek is.

Deze frisse groep brengt energieke en feestelijke funaná uit Kaapverdië. Funaná is dé populaire muziekstijl van het Kaapverdiaanse eiland Santiago. Deze muziek was tijdens het Portugese koloniale bewind verboden vanwege het schijnbaar opruiende en sensuele karakter ervan.
Oorspronkelijk is funaná de muziek van de nazaten van slaven, die in de jaren tachtig gemixt werd met pop en jazz. Basis voor de funaná zijn de diatonische accordeon (gaita) en de ferrinho, een metalen staaf met inkepingen waarop geraspt wordt.
Tabanka speelde al met veel succes op festivals als Oerol, Down The Rabbit Hole, Zwarte Cross en Gentse Feesten, en nu gaat ook in Leiden het dak eraf. 100% gegarandeerd!
De Afghaanse zangeres Elaha Soroor bracht afgelopen jaar samen met het Britse muziekproducer-duo Kefaya een betoverend mooi en internationaal bejubeld album uit: Songs of Our Mothers.
De muziek is net zo eclectisch als PSAS zelf: Afghaanse muziek wordt gemixt met invloeden uit o.a. de spirituele jazz, dub, Indiase klassieke muziek en electronica. Het leeuwendeel zijn liederen oorspronkelijk gezongen door Afghaanse vrouwen, die uitdrukking geven aan Elaha's eigen ervaring als vluchteling uit Afghanistan en aan de strijd die vrouwelijke artiesten in Afghanistan vandaag nog steeds moeten voeren tegen onderdrukking en vervolging.
Zoals Elaha Soroor zelf zegt: deze muziek is voor “alle vrouwen in de wereld waarvan hun beeld gewist en hun stem verboden is.”

Those interested in new and exciting music surely shouldn't miss the festival Peel Slowly And See (PSAS). The festival started as a small initiative by Velvet music store in Leiden. Key was and still is presenting new and exciting bands, from all music styles and genres.
Since the 2018 edition other music organisations in Leiden joined PSAS: Funked Up (specialised in funky jazz and soul), Subblicious (underground & alternative) and Muziekpodium De X (world music). This created an even more adventurous and more eclectic program. But always of high
quality!
Amongst others these bands will be presented:
This fresh band plays energetic and festive funaná from Cape Verde. Funaná is thé popular music style from the Capeverdian island Santiago. This music was forbidden during Portuguese colonial rule because of its apparently inciting and also sensual character.
Funaná is the music of the descendants of the slaves, that since the 80s has been mixed with pop and jazz. Characteristic are the diatonic accordion (gaita) and the ferrinho, a notched metal stick. Tabanka played on a lot of festivals like Oerol, Down The Rabbit Hole, Zwarte Cross and Gentse Feesten, and now the band will learn Leiden how to throw a party. 100% guaranteed!
Afghan singer Elaha Soroor and award-winning music/producer duo Kefaya, Al MacSween & Giuliano Modarelli released a mighty and mesmerizing new album this year: Songs Of Our Mothers. It's a fresh, vibrant take on Afghan folk music filtered through myriad forms, from spiritual jazz and dub to Indian classical music and electronica.
The music is a collection of folk songs traditionally performed by Afghan women, drawing on Elaha's own experience of fleeing Afghanistan and the struggle faced by many other female artists.
These songs tell stories of joy, pain and resilience, passed from mother to daughter in times of hardship and oppression whilst also celebrating femininity, sensuality and the spirit of resistance. As Elaha says, this album is for “those women around the world whose image has been erased, and whose voice has been forbidden.”
