Hudaki Village Band

De Hudaki Village Band is een 9-koppig ensemble uit Maramures, de bergachtige regio in het zuidwesten van de Oekraïne, grenzend aan Roemenië en Hongarije.

De traditionele muziek is veelzijdig door de vele verschillende invloeden, zoals oeroude Slavische vocale tradities, Roemeense melodieën en Joodse ritmes. Voeg daar nog eens het temperament van de Roma-zigeuners aan toe, en je begrijpt dat dat alles tot een muzikaal explosief mengsel leidt.

Net als hun voorgangers, de Rutheense, Joodse en zigeunerbands uit Maramures, weet ook de Hudaki Village Band hoe ze het publiek aan het dansen moeten krijgen. De groep bestaat uit virtuoze muzikanten die hun traditionele muziek met veel gevoel maar zonder enige opsmuk uitvoeren.
Op hun stomende, wilde ritmes is het zeer lastig stilzitten. De groep heeft inmiddels vele honderden concerten gegeven, waaronder op festivals als Sziget (Hongarije), Fusion (Duitsland) en Balkan Trafik (België).

Steaming traditional music from the Ukrainian Carpaths

Nine musicians from the Ukrainian Carpathians, this is the Hudaki Village Band. Their voices resound with heart and soul during day and night-long wedding parties. Like their forefathers – Jewish, Ruthenian and Romany bands from the Maramures region – they know how do one task perfectly: make people happy!

In the Maramures region, a mountainous area of South-west Ukraine on the border with Romania and Hungary, village musicians are called hudaki. Various ethnic musical influences make the traditional music multifaceted and unique. Archaic Slavic vocal tradition, Romanian melodies, Jewish rhythms and Romany temperament blend together in a local cross culture that has evolved over centuries of living side by side.

The Hudaki Village Band are the torch-bearers of this region. The group consists of virtuoso musicians who play their music with a lot of soul. The musicians themselves radiate this joie de vivre. From the heart and to the heart. It's very difficult not to move on their fierce, steaming rhythms. The band played hundreds of concerts, a.o. at festivals like Sziget (Hungary), Fusion (Germany) en Balkan Trafik (Belgium).
