Een avondje eigenzinnig grooven in De X tijdens de Leidse Blues- & Jazzweek.

Atanga Boom

Atanga Boom creëert een origineel, veelkleurig en organisch geluid. Afrofunk, spacejazz, het is het allemaal.

Zoals journalist Jaïr Tchong het verwoordde:
“Atanga Boom is gecultiveerde madness. Wild, onstuimig, rafelend en refererend aan New Yorkse legendes zoals Tom Waits-gitarist Marc Ribot, maar daarbij ook rijkelijk puttend uit wereldmuziek, funk en alles wat swingt. [...] Captain Beefheart zou dit alles goedkeurend gadeslaan.”

Na een onstuimige start in 2012 met o.a. optredens tijdens Felabration, Jazz in Duketown en North Sea Round Town en hun cd release in 2015 is het daarna wat stiller geweest rond de band. Maar nu is Atanga Boom weer helemaal terug in een deels nieuwe kick-ass bezetting.

Baskar

Een broeierige mix van instrumentale funk, afrobeat, psychedelica en een sporadische vleug experimentele jazz’’, zo wordt de muziek van de groep Baskar omschreven. Zelf noemt de groep het instrumentale space-funk. Het Leidse Baskar ontstond in 2015 als afstudeerproject van drummer Bob Hogenelst en organist Gertjan Gutman, beiden ook deel uitmakend van "Birth of Joy.“

Denk aan volvette, af en toe gierende gitaar- en orgeljams op Hammond en Fender-Rhodes, ondersteund door een groovy ritmesectie op bas, drums en percussie. Nu eens hoor je Santana of Medeski Martin & Wood langskomen, dan weer Fela Kuti, Geraldo Pino of Budos Band.

Beide bands klinken lekker eigenwijs en altijd groovy.

Groovy afrofunk and sultry spacejazz

Dance your heart away on some groovy music tonight.

For years Atanga Boom is creating an original, multi-colored and organic sound. Afrofunk, spacejazz, you name it. Like journalist Jaïr Tchong wrote: “Atanga Boom is cultivated madness. Wild, boisterous, edgy and referring to New York legends like Tom Waits' guitarist Marc Ribot, but at the same time extensively drawing from world music, funk and everything that swings. [...]Captain Beefheart would have nodded approvingly.”

After a great start in 2012 playing festivals like Felabration, Jazz in Duketown and North Sea Round Town and releasing their debut cd in 2015 it became somewhat quiet around the band. But now Atanga Boom is fully back on track again in a fresh, partly new kick-ass line-up.

Baskar was started in 2015 by drummer Bob Hogenelst and organ player Gertjan Gutman, both also part of the internationally touring psychrock band "Birth of Joy.“ A sultry mix of instrumenatl
funk, afrobeat, psychedelia and a little bit of experimental jazz’’, that's how the music of Baskar has been characterised in the Dutch press. The group itself calls it instrumental spacefunk. Sometimes you think of Santana or Medeski Martin & Wood, sometimes of Fela Kuti, Geraldo Pino or Budos Band.
